Ponyboy
In
the novel, The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton
demonstrates Ponyboy’s change from feeling like he doesn’t really fit in with
the greasers to feeling like he does fit in. With no change yet visible, he enjoyed
going to the movie theater. Also he likes reading books. He walked home alone
which is taking a risk because the socs always jump them. In the middle, he
didn’t like the socs but he didn’t hate them either. He thought that just
because they’re different it doesn’t mean they have to hate each other. One
thing that changed the way he thought about the socs is when he sat at the
movies with Cherry. When him and Cherry started getting close he realized that
not all socs are the same. Last, he realized Soda and Darry really cared about
him after get out of the hospital. After Soda told Ponyboy that they hadn’t gotten
any sleep at the hospital Ponyboy thought to himself, “I took a good look at
him. He looked completely worn out…” At first, Ponyboy thought that they only
cared about Dally and Johnny. They show him that even though they lost two very
important people in their lives; Johnny and Dally, they still cared about what
happened to him. In conclusion, Ponyboy changed from feeling like he doesn’t
fit in to later feeling like he did.
